APS to Consider Future of Independent Van Drivers at Tonight’s Meeting

< 1 min read

AKRON, Ohio-The future of van drivers like Lyons is uncertain as the Akron Board of Education prepares to vote on transportation contracts for the upcoming school year. The district currently uses independent contractors like Lyons, alongside firms like KBT Transit LLC and UTC Trans LLC, which were enlisted during emergencies, costing significantly more per student compared to independent contractors. Concerns are high among the nearly 150 van drivers about potential job losses or reduced opportunities as the district reviews transportation services. Angela Carter, APS Chief of Staff, explained the need for private companies’ assistance to manage fluctuations in student transportation needs, particularly under the McKinney-Vento Act for homeless students. The board’s decision on Monday will impact the future of these van drivers and the services they provide to the community.
