AKRON, Ohio-A group of eighth graders from Innes Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio, inspired by their desire to improve Prentiss Park, successfully won a $4,000 grant through Akron Public Schools’ Changemaker Challenge. Their initiative caught the attention of City Council member Tina Boyes, who entered Prentiss Park into the Akron Parks Challenge, ultimately securing an additional $150,000 for park improvements. The students’ advocacy and vision for a revitalized park, which includes upgraded facilities and better recreational spaces, impressed judges and community members alike. The project reflects the impact young people can have when they are passionate about community change and have support to realize their ideas.
