New State Law Prompts Ohio Schools to Revisit Phone Policies

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed a bill mandating all school districts in the state to implement policies regulating personal device use, with compliance expected by July 2025. The law aims to minimize cell phone distractions in classrooms. Local schools are reviewing existing policies to ensure alignment with the new legislation.

Yondr pouches, which lock phones away during the day, are being considered by some schools like Beavercreek High. Exceptions are provided for students with individualized education programs (IEPs). Neola, a policy provider for several schools, anticipates minimal adjustments. Districts like Kettering and Centerville plan to review policies in light of the new law, while Dayton Public Schools are developing new policies. Huber Heights already has technology use policies in place but will review cell phone guidelines.
