SPRINGFIELD, Ohio-Hayward Middle School’s drone soccer team showcased their skills to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and former Ohio State Buckeye football star Braxton Miller. Coach Luke Kelly highlighted the team’s pioneering status in the sport, having won Ohio’s first official drone soccer match earlier in the year.
The team, coached by Kelly and David Zeller, comprises students from various positions, sponsored by The Braxton Miller Foundation. DeWine praised the combination of fun, creativity, and learning evident in the program and emphasized the importance of such initiatives in engaging young people. Drone soccer, a fast-growing sport from Asia, involves teams of up to five players per side flying drones in a large cage, with the winner determined by goals scored. Miller expressed his commitment to expanding the program across different school levels and thanked the community for its support. Students found the competition enjoyable and educational, with Principal Edna Chapman expressing pride in the school’s efforts.
