CLEVELAND, Ohio-Researchers are conducting a study to develop a new vaccine for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a respiratory illness that poses a significant threat to young children. RSV can lead to severe conditions like Bronchiolitis and Pneumonia, resulting in hospitalization for thousands of children annually.
Expectant mothers receive a shot or newborns are administered an antibody to combat RSV, but a longer-lasting solution is being explored. The new vaccine aims to prevent RSV and potentially reduce asthma cases, as RSV is a major cause of asthma. Celina McWilliams, a mother whose child participated in the research, emphasized the importance of finding solutions to alleviate parental worries and improve children’s health. If successful, the vaccine could have a significant impact on reducing asthma-related deaths and alleviating parental concerns.
