AKRON, Ohio-An incident at Akron’s Firestone Community Learning Center on October 16 has sparked controversy over the role of police officers in schools. A 16-year-old student was punched multiple times in the head by school resource officer Zachary McCormick after attempting to evade metal detectors at the school’s entrance. The student had set off the detectors and tried to push past McCormick and another officer. The student who was punched explained that he had been trying to bring his phone into the building to listen to music, which violated the school’s rules, but he was not carrying a weapon. Though the charges against him were dropped, they could be refiled.
