< 1 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated annually on June 19. It commemorates the end of slavery in the country, specifically marking June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas after the Civil War.

The holiday, also known as Jubilee Day or Freedom Day, signifies African-American history and progress, observed with festivals, parades, and cultural events across the nation. Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved people and is a significant day for African-American communities.
