KETTERING, Ohio-The oldest building of Kettering City Schools, the D.L. Barnes building, underwent hazardous material abatement, a necessary step regardless of its demolition or preservation. Discussions about the fate of the 95-year-old structure, which had been approved for demolition, had stalled due to this process.
The Schiewetz Foundation of Dayton has expressed interest in salvaging part of the building. However, talks between the foundation and the school district have not progressed recently. The building, constructed in 1929, served as a high school and later as a junior high before the district consolidated. While the school board has not discussed Barnes’ future recently, President Toby Henderson expressed a personal desire for resolution, indicating a preference for demolition unless a viable alternative arises. Brady Kress of the Schiewetz Foundation emphasized the need to reconvene discussions after the abatement process and ensure security for the empty building.
