BG Board Hears Push for Arming Teachers in Schools

< 1 min read

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-During a Bowling Green City Schools board meeting, various community members voiced concerns and suggestions regarding school safety measures. Superintendent Francis Scruci emphasized the importance of mental health resources, stricter gun laws, and improved security measures such as the “Boot” system for locking doors.

Off-duty police officer Paul Tyson proposed arming teachers or hiring part-time police or military personnel to provide an armed presence, which garnered mixed reactions from attendees. Some supported the idea, believing it would deter potential shooters, while others argued against it, citing concerns about increased risks and the potential for accidents. The discussion also touched on the need for consequences for threats made on social media and the importance of proactive measures to identify and support troubled students. Board members expressed differing views on the issue of arming teachers, with some needing more information before making a decision. The community requested further meetings and specific plans for addressing school safety concerns.
