TOLEDO, Ohio-A new Ohio law requires school districts to inform parents when they monitor students’ activity on school devices. Senate Bill 29 aims to protect student privacy and keep parents informed about their children’s internet searches. Schools must notify parents within 72 hours of any monitoring, providing details on the reason for the surveillance and any actions taken. Dr. Bob Gulick, director of technology for Washington Local Schools, explained that monitoring is mandated by federal and state law. The system can flag keywords from students’ searches, which sometimes leads to alerts from seemingly innocent queries, like song lyrics. With around 7,000 students logged, the district generates over one million lines of data daily. The technology vendors assist in summarizing these reports to simplify the information for parents and the district.
