Chagrin Falls Toddler Diagnosed With Extremely Rare Cancer, Parents Warn Others Never to Ignore Symptoms

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio-McKenna Kranek, a 23-month-old from Chagrin Falls, is battling a rare form of lung cancer called Pleuropulmonary Blastoma (PPB). Despite the severity of her condition, she continues to exude joy and resilience. Her parents, Bryan and Meggy Kranek, received the devastating diagnosis after McKenna exhibited persistent fever and underwent testing.

Doctors discovered a baseball-sized cancerous mass in her lung. PPB is an exceptionally rare childhood cancer, with only 25 to 50 cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. Fortunately, McKenna’s treatment is being overseen by a team of highly experienced doctors at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s, who have developed a comprehensive treatment plan. McKenna underwent surgery to remove the tumor and one ovary, followed by chemotherapy to eradicate any remaining cancer cells.

The Kraneks emphasize the importance of parental advocacy, urging other parents to trust their instincts and seek medical attention if their child’s symptoms seem unusual. Despite the challenges they face, the Kraneks remain hopeful and focused on supporting McKenna through her treatment journey.
