GOP Brings Bill to Partner Child Care and Employers

< 1 min read

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Republicans in the Ohio House and Senate introduce companion bills, Senate Bill 273 and a yet-to-be-named House bill, aimed at addressing the child care crisis in the state. State Sen. Michele Reynolds and state Rep. Mark Johnson lead the initiative, proposing a voluntary program to partner employers and the state in providing child care for employees.

The bills come after a rally at the Ohio Statehouse highlighting the need for changes in child care accessibility and affordability. The proposed cost-sharing model would allocate $10 million, with equal contributions from eligible families, employers, and the Ohio Department of Children and Youth. While the program’s success hinges on future legislative decisions, sponsors hope it will stabilize child care providers and incentivize businesses to retain employees. The Ohio Chamber of Commerce and child advocacy groups support the initiative, viewing it as a crucial step in addressing workforce challenges related to child care.
