April 4th, 2024-GLANDORF, Ohio-Glandorf students recently participated in a Dragon KIND (Kids Impacted by Needs and Differences) event, offering hands-on experiences simulating various disabilities. Students in grades fifth through eight engaged in activities highlighting mobility impairments, hearing and vision impairments, and other challenges. They also learned about autism, learning disabilities, mental health, and communication impairments.
Jennifer Croy, Ottawa-Glandorf director of special services, emphasized fostering a welcoming attitude for everyone. Activities included navigating wheelchairs and walkers through obstacle courses, wearing special glasses to simulate visual impairments, and using non-dominant hands with gloves. The event aimed to support all students, promoting empathy and understanding. Speaker Ashley Goecke, a parent of a child with cerebral palsy, shared insights on acceptance and friendship, emphasizing that physical impairments don’t define individuals.
