March 29th, 2024-CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) utilizes initiatives like “Parent University,” led by employees such as Anthony Brown, to increase college enrollment rates in Cleveland. Brown organizes college bus tours, aiming to encourage students and parents to step out of their comfort zones. Despite these efforts, CMSD’s college enrollment rates remain low.
Brown, a charismatic figure, passionately promotes the importance of changing environments to potentially change lives. He leverages his personal experiences as a graduate of a historically Black college (HBCU) to connect with participants. Through social media, he showcases the value of these college tours, hoping to inspire more parents to participate.
However, challenges exist, such as the financial instability faced by HBCUs like Wilberforce University. Despite concerns about the institution’s future, Brown remains confident in recommending it to CMSD students, emphasizing the importance of HBCUs and their unique struggles compared to predominantly white institutions.
