Nonprofit Teaching Inner City Kids How to Swim

CLEVELAND, Ohio-A nonprofit called AquaMissions in Cleveland is addressing the lack of water safety and swimming skills among children, particularly those from minority communities. They’re offering free swimming lessons to 4th graders from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The program aims to combat the alarming statistics that show higher drowning rates among Black and Hispanic children compared to white children.

Through partnerships with organizations like the downtown Cleveland YMCA, they’re providing essential water safety education and swim lessons to around 300 students. This initiative not only teaches swimming skills but also expands the horizons of these children, many of whom have never had the opportunity to swim before. The founder, Lynne Nagy, believes that swimming is a crucial life skill that opens doors to various water-related activities and experiences. The program is funded through grants and donations, with plans for expansion in the future to reach more children in need.
