School Board Answers Questions Over Campaign Signs

NEW CUMBERLAND, Ohio-During the May 13 meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education, Superintendent Dan Enich addressed concerns regarding the placement of political campaign signage on school property, referencing Policy GBI. The policy emphasizes the right of employees and students to engage in political activities as citizens but prohibits the use of school property and time for political purposes.

Enich clarified that political signs were removed from school property to comply with the policy. Board members discussed various scenarios, such as advertising in athletic programs or sponsoring game balls, and were advised that individual sponsorship without campaign references would be acceptable. Enich agreed to consult with legal counsel to ensure clarity on the matter, with board members emphasizing the importance of students not appearing to represent the school during political events.
