SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio-Shaker Heights High School plans to implement a pilot weapon detection system by December 2, according to Superintendent Dr. David Glasner. This decision follows incidents involving weapons at the school and during a football game, prompting a review and enhancement of security measures. As a temporary response, the school has started checking students and searching bags upon entry. Feedback from surveys indicated strong support among staff and families for a weapon detection system, with students also showing interest, albeit to a lesser extent. The pilot program will test the system’s effectiveness, identify challenges, and assess staffing and maintenance needs. Glasner highlighted that this initiative aims to enhance safety while fostering a welcoming and inclusive school environment, emphasizing the importance of community support in these efforts.
