BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-Superintendent Francis Scruci affirmed that he will not propose altering the Board of Education’s policies prohibiting school personnel from carrying weapons in schools, despite recent tragedies such as the Texas school shooting. Scruci acknowledged the debates surrounding such incidents, including discussions on stricter gun laws, mental health, and arming school staff.
Although a recent law grants school districts the authority to allow personnel to carry guns with limited training, Scruci emphasized his stance against recommending arming administrators and staff to the board. He highlighted the proximity of schools to police stations and the presence of school resource officers, ensuring swift response to threats. Mayor Mike Aspacher reassured that officers would promptly intervene in such situations. Scruci concluded that existing policies ensure safety without the need for changes.
