After Long-Time Former Auditor Quit in 2022, Columbus Schools Hires Permanent Replacement

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Columbus City Schools Board of Education appointed Kevin O’Connor as the new internal auditor, replacing Carolyn Smith who resigned last year. O’Connor, a CCS graduate, previously served as interim internal auditor and brings extensive auditing experience from roles at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Auditor of State.

His annual salary for the position is $200,000. O’Connor emphasized collaboration and relationship-building in his new role. The appointment follows controversy surrounding Smith’s resignation after being instructed to halt a survey of teachers regarding building conditions, a decision that triggered a strike by Columbus City Schools teachers and staff in 2022. Board Member Jennifer Adair praised O’Connor’s proactive approach and highlighted the importance of transparency and adherence to policies for the district’s operations.
