AKRON, Ohio-The Akron Public Schools Board of Education has approved $24 million in budget cuts, resulting in the elimination of 285 positions, including approximately 160 currently filled roles.
The layoffs affect various teaching positions across different grade levels and subjects, as well as student success coaches, behavior climate coaches, school climate team members, academic advocates, and secretaries. While some teachers are being laid off, the district is reallocating 58 teachers from central office back into the classroom, leading to the displacement of 52 teachers with less experience. This restructuring ensures that essential classes are maintained despite the reductions.
