Akron Public Schools Transition Report Commends District’s Curriculum, but Says Administrators Need to do Better

AKRON, Ohio-Akron Public Schools commissioned the Burns/Van Fleet “Transition Report” to assess the district’s progress under Superintendent Dr. C. Michael Robinson. While commending the college and career program, the report highlights significant challenges. It criticizes low expectations, high implicit bias, inadequate professional development, and poor test scores.

Dr. Stuart Berger, the report’s lead, emphasizes the need for a culture shift towards high expectations and accountability. The report suggests 19 recommendations, including increasing professional development, restoring principal authority, and fostering a culture of excellence. Robinson declined to comment on the report but denied allegations of anti-union sentiments. The Board approved $24 million in cuts, aiming to address a budget deficit, with plans for a levy and bond issue in November.
