Teachers at Cincinnati Public Schools say many of their immigrant students have stayed home from school since President Donald Trump took office earlier this month, afraid that they’ll be taken by immigration officers if they step foot on campus.
“Families and parents are writing me saying they don’t want to send their children to school,” Rachel Von Holle, who teaches English to students who learned a different language first, told the school board during Monday’s business meeting. More than 3,600 Cincinnati Public Schools students are English language learners, or more than 1 in 10 students districtwide.
