CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Cleveland Teachers Union has accepted a new contract with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, effective from July 1, 2024. The agreement includes provisions for paid parental leave, salary adjustments for paraprofessionals, a ban on cellphones in classrooms to enhance safety and engagement, and the implementation of a district-wide online gradebook to improve communication with parents.
The contract received strong support from union members, with 70.49% voting in favor. Despite this progress, CMSD faces challenges such as budget deficits and potential school closures in the future, as indicated by Mayor Justin Bibb in his recent state of the city speech.
