COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Franklin County Internet Crimes Against Children task force in Central Ohio reports a 300% increase in tips related to online child exploitation over the past five years. Comprising federal and local law enforcement agencies, the task force has arrested 43 individuals in the past year, identifying at least 37 child victims.
Officers often go undercover online to catch predators on social media platforms. Tips are received through various channels, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Chief Deputy Rick Minerd urges vigilance in protecting children, highlighting a case involving a volunteer teacher arrested for possessing child sex abuse material. Other cases involve individuals with prior sex offense records, possessing disturbing content and preying on minors through online communication platforms.
