‘No Such Thing as a Gun Joke’: Ohio Officials Share Video Discouraging School Threats

CINCINNATI, Ohio-The Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS) has re-released a video to discourage students from making school threats, following a rise in such reports. The video was sent to school administrators statewide on Monday. Ellen Adkins, superintendent of Dawson-Bryant Local School District, shared a recent incident where a 6th grader threatened violence on Snapchat, leading to her arrest on felony charges. In the video, DPS director Andy Wilson emphasized the seriousness of threats, noting that jokes about violence will not be tolerated. The state has received 732 threat tips in 2024, nearing last year’s total, with violence threats among the top concerns. Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton also stressed that all threats should be taken seriously. The DPS urges students and parents to report threats rather than share them, to prevent panic and potential legal consequences.
