School Simulates What it’s Like to Live with Dyslexia

NEW ALBANY, Ohio-For Dyslexia Awareness Month, Marburn Academy in New Albany hosted a dyslexia simulation for parents to help them understand the challenges their children face. Many participating parents, including Wendy Hansen-Smith, reflected on their experiences with teaching their children to read. The simulation involved activities such as reading words obscured by symbols and writing in cursive with their non-dominant hand, all designed to foster empathy. Stephanie Royal, executive director of the Marburn Education Collaborative, emphasized the importance of parents experiencing these challenges to gain understanding and patience. Hansen-Smith expressed that the simulation provided her with valuable insight into her child’s struggles, helping her appreciate the difficulties they overcome.
