‘They Start Out Behind’: New Report Reveals Sobering Data About Ohio Children in Poverty

CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA) recently released a report highlighting child poverty in Ohio, revealing a childhood poverty rate of 17.7%, compared to the overall state poverty rate of 13.4%. The report indicates that Cuyahoga and Gallia Counties have the highest poverty metrics. The report notes that Ohio ranks 12th in the nation for poverty rates, with nearly one in four children living in cost-burdened households. Chisholm advocates for funding programs like Head Start, which support both children and parents. She also highlighted the need for businesses to consider the broader needs of their employees, such as transportation and childcare, to improve retention and support working families.
