A newly passed Ohio law would allow superintendents to expel students for significantly longer than a previous law, which superintendents say is important to maintain school safety but legal advocates worry could negatively impact students of color and in poverty, as well as those with mental health issues and disabilities.
More students in the last few years have been expelled in Ohio public schools for serious situations, such as bringing a gun to school. Superintendents say the length of time it takes to fix serious mental health issues often associated with those kids is significant beyond the time that students are currently allowed to be expelled under Ohio law.
