Organizations Tackle Franklin County’s Kindergarten Readiness Crisis

April 3rd, 2024-COLUMBUS, Ohio-Organizations in Franklin County, Ohio, are addressing a kindergarten readiness crisis, with over 60% of children, particularly in minority communities, unprepared for kindergarten. This lack of readiness can significantly impact future career and educational outcomes. The YMCA of Central Ohio’s early learning program is tackling this issue by providing resources and support. One mother, Houraye Sy, found help for her bilingual children through the YMCA’s Early Learning Center.

Despite not speaking English at home, her son excelled in kindergarten, attributed to the center’s preparation. The YMCA reports a high success rate, with 90% of children ready for kindergarten after attending their program. They emphasize hands-on learning and advocate for more early childhood centers to address this issue. Columbus City Council and the Franklin County Board of Commissioners are investing in programs like YMCA’s to improve kindergarten readiness countywide.
