CLEVELAND, Ohio-George Washington Carver Pre-K through 8th grade STEM School in Cleveland implemented a cellphone-free policy, requiring students to surrender their phones upon arrival each day. This decision faced initial resistance but significantly improved academic focus and reduced distractions.
Principal Susan Harvey noted positive impacts on both academic performance and school culture. Teachers observed increased student engagement and improved learning outcomes. Students, initially apprehensive, found themselves more focused and productive without their phones.
Travis Jones, a student at Carver, even received the Principal’s Award for his determination, attributing his success to the cellphone policy. Governor Mike DeWine supports such measures, advocating for legislation limiting cellphone use in schools.
