COLLUMBUS, Ohio-This summer, Columbus City Schools students participated in the Summer Experience Urban Agriculture Pathway to learn about agriculture’s relevance in everyday life. Led by Peggy Callander, a third-grade teacher at Berwick Alternative Elementary School, students explored the entire process of urban agriculture, from planting to harvesting. Many students, unfamiliar with agriculture, were surprised by its connection to everyday items. They grew produce indoors, even in small spaces like their classroom, using appropriate equipment. Students enjoyed the experience, finding it engaging and informative, with some expressing newfound interest in teaching others about urban agriculture. The school’s year-round garden ensures ongoing learning opportunities in urban farming.
