CCS Responds to Claims Special Education Classes aren’t Safe

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Parents and teachers are raising safety concerns about Columbus City Schools’ Specialized Learning Center classes, which are reportedly exceeding legal student limits. According to Omawale Green, whose son has autism, the classrooms are overcrowded, with 14 students in violation of Ohio law, which mandates a maximum of six for certain special needs classrooms. Green expressed that the current setup compromises safety for students, teachers, and aides. At a recent school board meeting, several parents and educators echoed these worries, noting that students are becoming overstimulated and disruptive. A former intervention specialist, Leah Stamos, resigned due to what she described as detrimental practices that violate legal and ethical standards. Green threatened to withdraw his child from the district if changes aren’t made by next semester, questioning the administration’s oversight that allowed this situation to develop.
