A New Law Makes Ohio Schools Limit Student Phone Use. Are Central Ohio Districts Ready?

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill mandating K-12 districts to implement policies reducing student phone use during school hours. The law requires districts to create their own policies or adopt a model policy provided by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

DeWine emphasized the need to address cellphone distractions in schools, aiming to enhance learning environments. Central Ohio districts, including South-Western City and Olentangy Local Schools, are confident in their existing policies but are prepared to make adjustments if needed.

Columbus City Schools and Westerville City Schools are also ensuring compliance with the new law. Research suggests that excessive cellphone use in classrooms can negatively impact learning outcomes, prompting support for measures to enhance student engagement and minimize distractions during instruction.
