CINCINNATI, Ohio-First Student, a leader in school transportation and electrification, has received $200 million in rebates from the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program, totaling over $400 million across three rounds. This funding will allow the deployment of up to 670 electric school buses in 45 districts, with a total of over 1,200 electric buses from all rounds. CEO John Kenning expressed gratitude for EPA support, emphasizing the importance of clean and safe rides for students.
First Student has already deployed over 350 electric buses and aims to transition 30,000 diesel vehicles to electric by 2035. The EPA investment accelerates this plan, with each electric bus reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Kevin Matthews, Head of Electrification, highlighted the partnership with EPA and the immediate benefits of safer and cleaner rides. The Clean School Bus Program aims to replace fossil fuel buses with zero-emission vehicles, with First Student securing funding through competitive bids and lottery rebates. They collaborate closely with districts, utilities, and municipalities to deploy and maintain vehicles, with expert consultants ensuring grant applications meet district needs.
