CLEVELAND, Ohio-In March, Birthing Beautiful Communities, a nonprofit aiding Black mothers and babies, received a $2 million donation from Mackenzie Scott and aimed to establish Ohio’s only freestanding, Black-led birthing center. However, opposition arose from some Hough residents concerned about property values and neighborhood dynamics.
The nonprofit sees the center as pivotal for community transformation, but locals prefer housing or green spaces. Despite community division, the organization remains committed to its mission of reducing infant mortality rates in the predominantly Black neighborhood.
