COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is set to sign legislation aimed at reducing student cellphone use in schools on Wednesday. The bill, passed by the Ohio House, will require K-12 school districts to establish policies to minimize cellphone distractions during school hours.
Schools can adopt their own policies or use a model provided by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. DeWine, echoing sentiments from his State of the State address, emphasized the negative impact of phones on classroom learning and mental health. The act will be signed at Karrer Middle School in Dublin and is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2025.
