COLUMBUS, Ohio-In anticipation of the anniversary of a shooting incident that occurred in the Short North on May 6, 2023, heightened security measures will be implemented in the area. Following the incident, which involved explosive gunfire resulting from a fight, safety restrictions were put in place by Columbus city leaders. These measures included a curfew for some businesses, removal of street parking on High Street, and the deployment of police towers.
Although residents initially felt on edge, they now perceive the Short North as a safe neighborhood. In collaboration with the Short North Alliance, Columbus Police will increase safety measures starting Saturday, including more visible officers, designated rideshare pickup areas, assigned spots for mobile food vendors, and extended paid parking hours until midnight. These efforts aim to address both safety concerns and perceptions of safety in the community.
