GROVE, Ohio-Parents in the South-Western City School District protested the board’s approval of a contract with lawyer Omar Tarazi at a special meeting on July 22. The contract, approved in a 3-1 vote with one member absent, stipulates Tarazi will receive a $9,000 monthly flat rate plus up to $300 per hour for additional services, with reimbursement for expenses. The contract, valid until December 31 with a renewal option, is expected to cost the district at least $54,000 over six months. Tarazi, who previously billed around $20,000 per month, will now have a clear, fixed payment structure. Protesters criticized the board for lack of transparency and for approving the contract despite community concerns. They also expressed frustration that public comments were not allowed during the meeting. Board members have not responded to media inquiries about the decision. In addition, Tarazi’s previous invoices for the district totaled $117,146.82, with $77,463.82 as his profit after deductions for other services. District spokesperson Evan Debo defended the contract, stating it provides clarity and avoids fluctuating invoice amounts.
