Teaching Fourth Graders History

GREENVILLE, Ohio-The Darke County Park District (DCP) has received a $17,046 grant from the Ohio History Fund, facilitated by the Ohio History Connection, to support its fourth-grade Pioneer Days at Bear’s Mill program. The grant, made possible through donations during Ohio tax filing and the sale of Ohio’s mastodon license plate, aims to engage young people in Ohio history through hands-on experiences.

Managed by Sophie Nieport, the program invites fourth graders to learn about life in the 1800s through various stations, including pioneer tools, corn milling, Native American life, and new additions such as presentations on historical figures like Lewis and Clark. Stations offer activities like tin smithing, toy making, and candle dipping, providing students with interactive learning opportunities. The program aligns with fourth-grade curriculum objectives, emphasizing the importance of hands-on learning in understanding local and state history.
