Attorneys Seek Competency Evaluation for Toledo Man Accused of Killing 15-Year-Old ex-Girlfriend

TOLEDO, Ohio-Attorneys representing Robert Shields III, accused of killing his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend Jaylah Perry, are seeking a competency evaluation and considering a not guilty by reason of insanity plea. Court filings indicate concerns about Shields’ ability to engage in discussions regarding his case, interact with family members, and behave appropriately in court and jail, citing previous mental health treatment.

Shields faces charges including Aggravated Murder and Murder for allegedly shooting Perry in the head on March 17. Perry, described by her father as bubbly and talkative, died from her injuries on March 20. Shields evaded police for nearly a month before being arrested in Indiana and extradited back to Toledo.
