North Canton City Schools Disciplines Students for Racial Insults Made on Bus

NORTH CANTON, Ohio-Middle school students in the North Canton City School District used racially divisive language to insult another student on a school bus, as captured in a video shared with the district. Superintendent Jeff Wendorf stated that the district promptly disciplined the students involved, emphasizing that such behavior is not tolerated and does not align with the district’s values of respect and diversity.

The victim, a 12-year-old Black girl, recorded the insults and shared them with her mother, expressing her upset at being judged based on her race. Her mother, Angela Curry, called for the offending student to be suspended from school and bus riding. Curry also highlighted a past incident where another daughter was compelled to play the role of a slave in a school play, raising concerns about a pattern of racial insensitivity within the district.
