The Cell Phone Policy in Action: Is it Working?

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-Ohio’s new law on cell phone use in classrooms is already showing positive effects at East High School. Principal Debra Campbell noted increased student engagement and fewer distractions from phones, which previously disrupted learning through communication and gaming. Both Campbell and Assistant Principal Adam Loudin hope the ban will also improve students’ social skills, as they now interact more face-to-face instead of messaging each other. The school is awaiting the arrival of Yondr pouches, designed to temporarily lock away devices during school hours. Students caught with phones must have their parents pick them up at the end of the day, a measure that has been well-received by families.
