Steubenville High School has launched a carpentry program in partnership with Carpenters Local Union 186 to prepare students for careers in trades.
Now in its second year, the program includes 34 students, focusing on hands-on skills and safety practices.
Teacher Jacob Hudson emphasizes the importance of tradespeople due to an aging workforce and the ongoing need for skilled workers.
Students complete projects such as building birdhouses and picnic tables for community benefit, while also earning credits toward their graduation and gaining apprenticeship experience.
The curriculum features four instructional books, where first-year students learn basic construction and larger project skills, while second-year students focus on residential building techniques.
