Students struggling to read post-pandemic; local literacy groups explain why

The government invested billions of dollars in schools to help them recover from the pandemic, but five years later, many students are still struggling—especially with reading.

The latest Nation’s Report Card showed that elementary and middle school students aren’t making sufficient progress to recover the learning losses caused by the pandemic. The report, which focuses on fourth and eighth graders, revealed that, although reading scores were already declining in 2019, they have dropped by an additional five points for both grade levels since then.
