CLEVELAND, Ohio-Each year, over 100,000 new pediatric scoliosis cases are reported in the U.S., with early detection reducing the need for surgery. Akron Children’s Hospital held an event at Edgewater Beach to promote early scoliosis detection. They distributed free sunscreen and towels with information on spotting scoliosis signs, such as uneven shoulders or a curving spine. Pediatric nurse practitioners offered free screenings. Jessica Westfall from the hospital emphasized the importance of early treatment to avoid surgery. Since scoliosis screenings are no longer mandatory in Ohio schools, the hospital’s SpineScreen initiative aims to integrate screenings into routine activities. Parents who missed the event are encouraged to request scoliosis checks at their child’s next pediatrician visit.
