JEFFERSON, Ohio-This week marks School Bus Safety Week, an initiative that began in 1970 and is observed every third week of October. The goal is to raise awareness about school bus safety, emphasizing the importance of drivers being vigilant around buses and stopping when lights are activated. Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Robert Bodo highlighted that over the past five years, there have been more than 6,000 school bus crashes and over 16,000 violations. Educational efforts also focus on teaching students proper bus behavior and safety rules. Bodo reminded drivers to maintain distance when yellow lights flash and to stop at least 10 feet behind a bus when red lights are on. He noted that traffic laws vary depending on road types, particularly regarding whether oncoming traffic must stop.
