April 1st, 2024-DUBLIN, Ohio-Gov. Mike DeWine convened a meeting with school administrators to discuss implementing policies to curb middle and high school students’ cellphone use during school hours. The consensus among attendees was that limiting smartphone use not only enhances learning but also contributes to students’ overall happiness. Superintendents shared instances of how excessive phone usage led to issues like bullying, fights, and truancy.
They reported positive outcomes after enforcing restrictions, such as increased social interaction, reduced suicide assessments, and improved test scores, though they acknowledged that smartphones were just one of many factors influencing academic performance. Diana Rigby, a Dublin School Board member, emphasized the importance of creating an environment conducive to learning and active student engagement by minimizing cellphone distractions.
