30% of Ohioans Don’t Have Access to Child Care, Nonprofit Reports

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Groundwork Ohio, a nonprofit focusing on early childhood issues, highlighted Ohio’s child care crisis during their recent stop in Dayton as part of a listening tour. They found that 30% of Ohioans lack access to child care due to insufficient slots. In Montgomery County, more than 100 professionals discussed challenges such as high costs, with infant center-based care estimated at $14,189 annually.

Lynn Guttierez, president of Groundwork Ohio, emphasized the difficulty in finding available child care even for those who can afford it. Providers struggle to sustain their programs, particularly in supporting children with special needs, as noted by Renata Weaver, a child care center operator in West Dayton. Groundwork Ohio aims to gather feedback across the state to advocate for solutions in Columbus, with upcoming community discussions planned in Piqua and Cincinnati.
