Akron Public Schools Reorganization Plan Cuts $24 Million, 285 Positions by July 1

AKRON, Ohio-Akron Public Schools administrators are proposing $24 million in cuts for the next year, which includes eliminating 285 positions across the district. About 170 of these cuts will involve current job reductions, with the remainder achieved through attrition.

The Akron Education Association is facing about 200 job losses, including 66.5 classroom positions, 58 non-classroom roles, and 77 noncertified substitute teachers. Superintendent Michael Robinson emphasized the preservation of classroom instruction, aiming to make it the last area affected. The cuts, higher than initially shared, are not solely contingent on a levy passing, and further reductions may be necessary regardless. The proposed cuts encompass various roles, including administrators, custodial and maintenance workers, transportation staff, and clerical or support positions.
