Columbus Youth Learning Trade Skills Through Summer Program

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Community organizations in Columbus are responding to rising youth violence statistics, with 18 homicide victims and 22 suspects under 21 years old reported this year. In response, initiatives like Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children (MOMCC) are expanding youth programming. MOMCC’s “Under Triple Digits” and “Trendy Trades” summer programs received $125,000 in city funding, aiming to teach practical skills like construction and car repair. These efforts aim to provide career options and keep youth engaged, reducing involvement in violence. Participants like Deshjauna Jones find these programs valuable in keeping busy and avoiding trouble, reflecting a broader effort to create opportunities and prevent youth violence in the community.
